Unconventional Drug And Alcohol Treatment - Is It For You? : Alcohol rehab Drug rehab treatment center review

Unconventional Drug And Alcohol Treatment - Is It For You?
by Tony Palmer

Are you looking for an unconventional drug and alcohol treatment program? Well you are not alone. The conventional twelve step program for alcohol and drug abuse treatment espoused by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is not for everyone.
The "Higher Power" Problem
For one thing, AA's twelve steps emphasize reliance on a "higher power," or spiritual being, and atheists or agnostics, who don't believe in a god, feel disenfranchised from a drug and alcohol treatment program that goes against the grain of their personal beliefs.
AA tries to be both a conventional and an unconventional drug and alcohol treatment program, and tries to include these outliers, by teaching that each individual going through recovery can use his or her own idea of god as they work through the twelve steps, regardless of their religious beliefs.
However, the term "God" is so enmeshed in the AA literature and philosophy, addicts who have had negative experiences with religion or who simply do not believe in a god have a hard time adapting to AA, and they seek unconventional alcohol and drug treatment programs that do not rely on a belief in a god or a higher power.
The Criminal Justice Problem
Because of the separation of church and state ordered by the U.S. Constitution, and because of the pervasiveness of the "higher power" in AA treatment, some courts have held that defendants in the criminal justice system, who are being sentenced for drug and alcohol related crimes, cannot be required to attend AA meetings as a condition of their probation or parole. These defendants need to have the alternative of an unconventional alcohol and drug treatment program that does not require belief in a spiritual being.
Unconventional Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers
One successful unconventional drug and alcohol treatment center describes its treatment as a "social based drug and alcohol rehab treatment alternative for addiction recovery and alcoholism." Information about this unconventional alcohol treatment center suggests that traditional twelve step programs don't work, and that alcoholism is not a disease.
These unconventional drug and alcohol treatment centers focus on "common sense solutions" and change behavior by using recovery plans with specific elements and goals. Since the program teaches that alcoholism is not a disease, clients of the program are taught that they are empowered to change their behavior without the aid of a higher power or spiritual being. This really is a step in the right direction. Unconventional drug and alcohol treatment programs have a high ratio of staff to guest. Most programs offer lots of fun activities to fill the hours between instruction sessions and motivational lectures. Campral is the most recent medication that has been approved for the treatment of alcohol dependence, and although it is not completely understood how the drug works, the idea is that it works in the brain to help people maintain alcohol abstinence. It is believed to be able to restore a certain chemical balance in the brain that has been disrupted by certain factors in the person's life.

With over 11,000 treatment facilities in the United States today along with a growing awareness in the media of the drug and alcohol problem, government and private centers are striving to help more and more people each year. Many of these centers have expanded their programs to suit more needs of the addicted and new treatment centers are opening almost weekly around the country.
Just take a look at the recent programming on television:
Intervention on A&E Celebrity Rehab on VH1 True Life on MTV
Let alone all the exposure that many celebrities like Brittany Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Ritchie and Paris Hilton.
There is more and more attention being given to this mortal and traumatic issue of addiction. Help finding treatment is necessary.
Separation from drugs and alcohol is usually the first step in the treatment process. Newer modalities for detox are coming available in recent times. For most people, a comfortable medical detox is in store at many of these facilities. In addition, there are even protocols that cater to those who are unable to leave their jobs for long periods of time.
Residential treatment programs are the long-standing proven methods of substance abuse recovery. One of the rules of thumb to use when considering a treatment center is: "the longer the better." Research has shown that the longer a person stays in a rehab, the better his/her chances for success in recovery from drugs and alcohol.
Outpatient treatment is becoming more common in several areas around the country. A multitude of these centers are usually available in every corner of every city. For those who cannot afford a residential program or simply cannot remove themselves from their home and/or work life, outpatient can serve as an excellent alternative.
